Description
The concept for this painting was inspired by the FAA contest New Year 2011 Painting Contest. While I dont consider myself a painter, Ive done a few amateur attempts but consider myself a photographer and digital artist. 2010 was a pivotal year for me when my beautiful, loving mother died in March. In May, I turned 65. In September, I resigned as the director of the non-profit organization I founded and chose to go into private practice. It was a year of loss and grief. As a grief counselor, I handled my sorrow by diving into art as a way to heal. Ive learned many new things and still have much to learn.
This painting started with an undercoating of black to reflect the dark year that it was, and also, the human condition of our awareness that our own death is approaching at some point. At the left, I started with a palette knife and the darkest red and worked my way toward lighter tones, allowing some black to show through each step of the way. The lower third of the painting shows other colors from the painting in order to reflect that there are bits and pieces of ourselves that pattern back and forth in our lives and never quite disappearnor would we want them to. There is light in the dark and dark in the light. And thats how I see myself, Moving Forward into 2011.

This is a dramatically beautiful painting, I Love It! I too lost my Mom this past September to Leukemia. Had she hung on, she would have been 75 on Oct. 30th. I'm 45 and I profoundly feel your pain :-( Your painting is remarkable! I see many different emotions as well as faces and people throughout it. Like, there is the head of a man with a mustache in the last column of red, right before the violet/purple. I love catching things like that in paintings like yours. You really did and incredible job on this. Congratulations!!! Maria.

You are a good painter, Lenore! I love the textures in this painting and how the colors pop off of the black background. I think some of the impressionists used black gesso...
