Artist's Description
My father accepted the minister position in Saratoga, Wyoming in 1960. Before that, we were in Texas where Dad regularly exchanged pulpits with black preachers, at which time, the congregation stopped paying his salary. I've been back to Saratoga hundreds of times and never had an inclination to photograph this church as I also have mixed feelings about organized religion. This trip, I felt nostagic and decided to look at the family's experiences in the church, both good and bad, straight in the face. My father retired early from the church, the family built a log cabin by hand in the foothills of the rocky mountains, and moved in while I was in college, even though the cabin wasn't finished yet and a storm was howling. Here, except for financial worries, my father felt artistic and emotional freedom and resumed his art and writing full time.

I like the feeling you acheived in this exquisite photograph -- so subtle in its effects and emotional resonance. The stark, stumpily-trimmed trees and the quietude give a sense of your mixed feelings. I was too little to remember much, but Dad's resonant voice echoing among the rafters left an indelible impression of awe and security, simplicity and profundity, love and challenge (for Dad challenged his congregation to ACT on their Christian faith) and a feeling that something of cosmic significance was happening in that sanctuary while he spoke. Never mind that in another hour he'd be sprawled in his easy chair at home, reading the comics to me.
