Man in a Box
Artist
Lenore Senior
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas Board
Description
This is a painting I did many years ago based on Dostoevsky's The Man from Underground. Lenore Senior's oil painting entitled, "Man in a Box," was chosen by Dennis Morrow, M.A.Ed., MBA for his new CD and promotional materials to be distributed to schools, counselors, non-profits, etc. entitled "The MaleBox." Morrow has been the Executive Director of Janus Youth Programs, Inc. since 1980. He is also an adjunct assistant professor at Portland State University and an instructor at Portland Community College. He has been involved in developing counselor and parent training programs for over 30 years. Senior is extremely honored to be chosen for this special presentation about the counseling of men and boys in our society. Yes, powerful! I have a series called "Out of the Box" a historical series that reveals hidden truths regarding racism. Your piece examines the state of man. My husband owns a piece that has a similar structure. Your abstracted approach generalizes the subject and makes it applicable to everyone everywhere as your other admirers point out so well.

This piece is deeper than deep. I totally agree with Dawn and Judy. "The Man in the Box" relates to everyone who is conscious that he or she is in a box. Life (in the flesh) is a box... and the death is a box - only the spirit can escape this box. [metaphor:a grave] Tradition, racism, nationalism, gender, religion without intimacy with God etc can be seen as a box to keep one from renewing his or her mind in order to be free. The man in the painting is in the box of humanity, and it is a heck of a struggle to escape that box or mentality. Faith, purpose and courage are the tools to help him or her conquer that box. That box is a mountain that we can either conquer or get crushed by it... AWESOME WORK, LENORE!!! THANK YOU FOR CREATING IT! Blessings!
